Mental illness is becoming more and more prevalent in law enforcement. In order to meet these challenges, HPD is a member of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). We have officers specifically trained in providing help to those persons in crisis. These officers take a 40 hour in service class to learn how to deescalate and assist those in crisis. HPD also has an instructor in this program.
The CIT is comprised of representatives from Communicare, Lincoln Trail Behavioral Health, local prosecutors, Hardin Memorial Hospital, Adult Protective Services and local law enforcement. We meet once a month to discuss current issues and how to address them.
